Children We Have Helped
All of the requests we receive are deeply compelling. The challenges faced by these amazing children vary greatly. Despite the difficulties they experience every day, it is not adversity that shines through but rather their strength, perseverance and determination. Though each child holds a special place in our hearts, several stories really stand out.

Haven is 5 years old and was diagnosed with a form of Cerebral Palsy called Spastic Diplegia, which means that both of her legs are affected. Her Mom is a single parent with 2 other children. She wants the best for her children but finds it difficult to deal with the financial pressure, particularly because of the added requirements of a child with special needs. Challenged America was pleased to provide an adaptive chair for Haven to use in therapy and at daycare.

Greta is 7 yrs old and suffers from Angelman Syndrome, which causes developmental delays, lack of speech, seizures, and walking and balance disorders. Individuals with Angelman Syndrome require lifelong care. In addition to dealing with Greta’s condition, her family also recently faced the tragic loss of one of her siblings. Because of these difficult circumstances, this family does not have the means to provide equipment that will improve the quality of Greta’s life. MGCA provided a booster chair for Greta that allows her to spend time with her family safely and comfortably.

Eric is 8 ˝ years old and was born with multiple defects. He is unable to walk or talk and is dependent on oxygen. Despite these challenges, Eric’s family is determined to stay active in their community. MGCA purchased a lightweight special needs stroller that allows Eric to get out and experience all kinds of new things!

Brandon is 11 years old and has Down Syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder, and Pervasive Developmental Disorder. He is considered nonverbal but understands and says some words. Brandon was often frustrated because he couldn’t get his point across. MGCA provided learning materials from Love & Learning that are specifically designed to teach children with Down Syndrome to read and write. Many children have benefitted from these materials in the past, and we are confident that Brandon will enjoy great success with them as well.

Kim, Gabriel and Patrick

Kim is 14 years old, Gabriel is 7 ˝, and Patrick is 15. Each of these children has various disabilities caused by congenital defects, prematurity, and autism, to name a few. Their extraordinary parents had already raised 5 biological children, but later adopted 9 additional children, all of whom have special needs! MGCA provided gifts for Kim, Gabriel, and Patrick to help them deal with their symptoms and the rigors of regular treatments. Though it cannot be easy, this family has not been held back by the challenges they face. Instead, these children have been taught that nothing is out of reach. The example provided by this family is truly humbling.
